Worth reading before you reserve your trip with us:

The Western Cape is one of the finest hunting destinations for bird hunters in the world. Various bird species are available to hunt. Some are more challenging than others, but overall it is a great opportunity and a lot of fun. We offer "rough shooting", meaning that some effort is required while hunting with us. This way, we can ensure good results on each hunting trip.

During the summer months after our wheat has been harvested, we offer excellent Rock Pigeon shooting days. You could be shooting at pigeons at speeds of over 70 Km (43 MPH) an hour. This is an exciting challenge.

During winter, geese are also a great challenge around our ponds with hides and decoys.

Guinea fowl is one of the most intelligent terrestrial birds around, making them a lot more difficult to hunt than any other bird.

Bird hunting is mostly seasonal, however we do hunt right through the year. The whole area is well monitored for established flight paths. We use both decoys and well-constructed blinds.

(Note: if you have hunted doves/pigeons in Argentina... please don't have the same expectations)

The following birds are available to hunt on a seasonal basis: Egyptian and Spur wing Geese, Guinea fowl, Rock pigeon, Cape Spur Francolin, Yellow-billed duck, Red-billed teal, Cape Shoveller, Cape Teal, Hottentot Teal, African black duck, Cape Turtle Dove.

The best time for bird hunting in the year is as follows: For Egyptian and Spur wing the best months are from May to end July, however they can be selectively hunted throughout the year. We also have good geese hunting during our summer months around our ponds and dams. From August onwards, it is breeding season and they start to pair off. Sufficient water supplies around their nesting areas means that they do not have to travel much, making it harder to find them.

One could expect to hunt anything from 5 to 10 Egyptian or Spur wing geese per trip. They can be hunted either in the early morning or in the late afternoon, although we prefer late afternoons as we make use of hides and decoys during this time.

Red-billed Teal, Cape Shoveller, Cape Teal, Hottentot Teal, African black duck, Yellow-billed duck is hunted from small dams and pans from hides and decoys. The best time is from May to end July. Expect to bag about 5 a day.

Francolin and Guinea fowl are found walking through brush. Guinea fowl can be quite cunning, making it a challenging hunting experience. One can walk around all day, stalking them. They have excellent hearing and eyesight, which allows then to elude the hunter and thus are our favourite birds to hunt. The best time to hunt them will be from April to end of September, and one can expect to bag 5-10 birds a day.

Cape Town offers high volume pigeon shooting from the middle of November to middle or end March. One can expect to shoot 100 to 200 pigeons per day, with a kill rate of 20 to 60 percent depending on the skill of the hunter. Our pigeon shooting is done between 3 to 5:30pm and can be very challenging as we experience strong South Easterly winds during this time of the year.

For the best bird hunting experience we recommend safaris between 2-4 days. However our One Day Safaris are very popular. Since we are hunting naturally occurring wildlife, we warn people not to set their expectations too high. Unlike the UK and other parts of the world our birds are not bred and driven, except for Guinea fowl, which can be found in large flocks from time to time.

Bird hunting safaris can be arranged all over our country, should you require different species or habitat. Drop us an email with your requirements and we will look into arranging a tailored hunting safari for you.

Note:

To ensure the safety and good health of clients all reasonable precautions will be taken, however, no liability will be accepted for injury or illness before and after the safari.
